14th November2019 – Fifty years ago today David Bowie released his self-titled album, whichfeatured his first trans-Atlantic hit ‘SPACE ODDITY’.
To celebrate this milestone, longtime Bowie producer/collaborator Tony Visconti has remixed the track in 360 Reality Audio music format, a new 3D audio from Sony. With 360 Reality Audio, the listener experiences the vocals and instruments placed within a spherical space, creating an immersive sound that closely mimics the omni-directional soundscape of a live musical performance.

TonyVisconti describes this new version of the track as “When I first heard Sony360 I was quite amazed, in the headphones it was remarkable how you could hearthings behind you and above you.

Thenew immersive mix will be available via Amazon HD using Amazon EchoStudio, and via Deezer and TIDAL using headphones, more news to follow.
This nascent period of Bowie’s career has been curated into five-CD boxset ‘CONVERSATION PIECE’ which is released on 15th November and features a dozen unheard songs as well as alternate takes, radio sessions, new mixes and demos.

Over the past 50 years Space Oddity has been on a journeyas endless as that of its main character, MajorTom. Originally written and demoed in November 1968, thesong has gone through many guises from appearing in the filmed fortelevision special Love You Til Tuesday in an earlier incarnation with John‘Hutch’ Hutchinson, to being recorded in Italian (“Ragazzosolo, Ragazza sola”), winning an Ivor Novello Special Award forOriginality in May 1970. The song was Bowie’s first hit on both sidesof the Atlantic (#5 in the U.K. in 1969, #1 in the U.K. in 1975 and#15 in the U.S. in 1973), and in 2013 became the firstmusic video shot in space, when performed by Canadianastronaut Commander Chris Hadfield aboard the International SpaceStation. Major Tom remained a motif for Bowie throughout hiscareer, revisiting the character in the songs “Ashes to Ashes”,“Hallo Spaceboy” and in the music video for “★”.

The collection also celebrates the 50thanniversaries of the release of the ‘Space Oddity’ single and David’ssecond album, David Bowie (aka Space Oddity).
DAVIDBOWIE CONVERSATION PIECE contains twelve previously unreleasedtracks/demos from the period as well as a brand new mix of the SpaceOddity (aka David Bowie) album by long-time Bowie producer/collaboratorTony Visconti.
Thestunning 120 page hardback book accompanying the box features exclusivememorabilia from the personal collection of David’s formermanager, the late Ken Pitt, as well as from the David BowieArchive®, and includes photos by Ray Stevenson, Vernon Dewhurst,David Bebbington, Ken Pitt, Alec Byrne, Tony Visconti and Jojanneke Claasen.
The sleeve notes have been written for the release by Bowie experts Mark Adams,Tris Penna and Kevin Cann along with contributions from David’s lifelongfriend George Underwood, Tony Visconti, Vernon Dewhurst, Dana Gillespieand John ‘Hutch’ Hutchinson.

Deezer has been embracing the ’80s theme of this year’s National Album Day with a drive-in music experience.
Ahead of the nationwide celebration of the long-player this weekend (October 10), the streaming service staged its ticketed Deezer Drive-In event in North London this week featuring food at 1980s prices and concert performances from legends of the decade on a giant screen.
All proceeds from the drive-in event go to Help Musicians.
Deezer also celebrates the era throughout the year with its 80s Super Hits playlist.

How has Deezer embraced this year’s National Album Day 1980s theme?
“This is our third year supporting National Album Day and it’s really exciting to focus on such an iconic decade. We’ve launched a dedicated National Album Day channel on Deezer, highlighting a wide selection of ’80s records, across a range of genres. We hope fans get stuck into discovering and rediscovering some of the ’80s’ fantastic albums. The channel will also be supported across Deezer and on our social channels.
